Reasons for Murder

While battling alcoholism from the death of his parents, Canyon starts an investigation based

on a ‘feeling’ he gets. When it leads to a double murder, things get complicated when the CIA

takes over his primary crime scene. After the FBI and LAPD are politely told to “Butt out”,

Canyon ignores that order, and finds himself on a journey through the world of counter

espionage. Even with his shaky ‘Gift', he has to solve a complex puzzle, that involves multiple

agencies, who have agendas of their own

Sample of written poetry

As I sit here alone, thinking of you,

life was all bright, fresh, and new.

Then one thought crossed through my mind,

life without you, and what I would find.

All that I saw through darkness and gloom,

was a lonely old man, with nothing but doom.

He walked down the street, with his head held low,

and no thoughts of love, or warmth, did he know.

Then I flashed back, to my own place and time,

with only one thought, racing through my mind.

I did not want to know, or find to be true,

what life would be like, if I wasn't with you.

This is a sort of boiled-noir detective story with some familiar tropes that crime fans will love (the brilliant detective with a painful past that leads to drinking on the job [Backstrom]… mysterious gifts [Dresden], etc.) Reasons For Murder is part of a series following detective Robert Canyon who becomes entangled in a mystery and caught in the crossfire of an inter-agency conflict where lives are nothing more than pawns in a larger game and life and death stakes are the norm.

Loved it. Other than it starts out a bit slow, was a great read. Once I was past chapter 8 I couldn't put it down. Had to do an all nighter to finish it. Detective Canyon might come across as driven, with little humor, but a brilliant driven detective he is. The story has some minor twists and turns, and his gift isn't as prominent as I would have liked, but over all is a great read.
